ABOUT US

Founded by students in 1979, Minotaur Theatre Company offers the students at the University of East Anglia a chance to showcase their work outside of the academic programme. Run by the students, there are currently around 150 members of the company, comprising of all three undergraduate degrees in Drama (BA Drama, BA Drama and English, BA Scriptwriting and Performance). Although entirely self-funded, we work closely with UEA’s Drama Studio and greatly appreciate the facilities and the hard work of the staff that work there.

It’s very important to us that Minotaur continues to offer a wide range of opportunities to its members. We aim to develop skills in acting, singing and movement as well as in directing, technical operating, stage/theatre management and production design. We want to try and prepare our members for the future, in whichever field they want to pursue.

While our primary venue is the UEA Drama Studio, we strive to cultivate professional relationships with local theatres and venues. Within recent years, we've started performing at The Garage, Norwich and the National Students Drama Festival 2014, Scarborough and annually perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We are continually seeking out new and exciting opportunities for our members.

For those studying Scriptwriting at UEA, Minotaur offers many new writing opportunities to those in the company. Alongside our line up of published works, we offer our members the chance to write and devise short plays to be performed during our annual Shorts Festival. Once a year, we also choose a full-length script during our in house Creative Writing Competition. It’s immensely rewarding for the writer to see their script come to life, in a full-scale production.

But we give back to more than just our members; Minotaur hosts several Charitable Events every year. Cabaret: A Night at the Musicals aims to raise money for charities that mean something to someone in the company. Every year we raise over £1,000 for our chosen charity. In the past we’ve raised money for:

St Christopher's

... also Breast Cancer Research, Cancer Research UK, ACODO (Assisting Cambodian Orphans and the Disabled Organisation), The Elimu Foundation, the Parasol Project and the Meningitis Research Foundation

Our Feminist Theatre Production also raises money for charity, but, more importantly, raises awareness of local and national issues.  We’ve partnered with Leeway, which protects men, women and children from domestic abuse and violence. Recent productions based on Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues have helped raise over £2,000 so far for Leeway.

With alumni such as Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Greg James (BBC Radio 1), Deborah Bruce (director at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre) Oscar-nominated screenwriter, Tom Bidwell and Gareth Malone (BBC’s The Choir), we’re confident that we’re providing the best first steps for our company. We hope every member, past, present and future, the best of luck in everything they do!

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank those who work at the University of East Anglia and assist us in our productions:

Scott Brown, Rob Little, Chad Mason and Tony Frost

THE JULIANS

Once a year, all of the members of Minotaur Theatre Company come together and reflect on the year just finished. We host The Julians as a chance for our members to vote on their favourite Production and who deserves to be recognised for all of their hard work.
