Fuelled by fantasy, three young people decided that they must teach their tabloid-obsessed landlord a lesson, for being stupid. When they kidnap his beloved dog, they set off a chain of events that none of them seem able to stop, until all four are lost in a world where farce has turned to tragedy.

Darkle Poster

Presented as part of UEA's 50th-anniversary celebrations in March, UEA Drama and Minotaur Theatre Company revived Bill Gallagher's darkly comic play 25 years after its first performance. Last seen on campus in 1988, Darkle went on to win The Sunday Times Playwriting Award at the National Student Drama Festival, and transferred to the Assembly Rooms at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, to further acclaim.

Alumni from the original cast include future stars of stage and screen James Frain (The Tudors, True Blood, RSC) and the director of the show's revival, Sophie Vaughan (Drama tutor and acting coach at UEA). After the success of the March revival, a cast and crew of current second and third-year students, along with Scottish actor David Hayman (The Paradise, Boy in the Striped Pajamas) will take to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer to rediscover this riotous black comedy.
